Pat has trained for 30 years in Shotokan Karate under the tutelage of her late husband Grandmaster James T. Martin, Sr., earning the rank of 10th Degree black belt- Grandmaster in Shotokan Karate. She has competed extensively throughout the U.S. and in Russia winning numerous grand-championships in both kumite and kata. She has won countless medals at the regional, state, and national level, earning a berth on the United States Team during the time the USAKF (United States of America Karate Federation) fought for Olympic berth.

Pat competed on the U.S. team against Greece, the only competitor to win her kumite match. She was also invited to train at Colorado Springs and to compete with the team in Hungary.
